It's Friday and TikTok has secured an unexpected ally in its quest to become a search engine. The partner-slash-rival in question: Google Search.

YouTube just dropped its very own mobile editing app: YouTube Create

YouTube is giving creators a new way to edit their videos. Until now, many YouTubers have turned to CapCut—a Bytedance-owned editing platform designed for TikTok videos—in order to prep their short-form content for posting.

YouTube’s new app aims to make that step unnecessary.

According to information provided at this week’s Made on YouTube event, YouTube Create is “designed to empower creators to get started with a suite of production tools to edit their Shorts, longer videos, or both.” YouTubers won’t have to wait long to test it out: as of yesterday, the app is available for Android users in eight countries (the U.S., U.K., Germany, France, Indonesia, India, Korea, and Singapore), and includes editing, trimming, and automatic captioning features, as well as voiceover editing capabilities and a library of filters, effects, transitions, and royalty-free music.

“We know the production process for videos can be difficult and often prevents that first-time creator from uploading their first video. YouTube Create is free of charge and designed to make video production for Shorts or longer videos simpler and easier so creators can spend more energy on things they find creatively rewarding.”

YouTube Create isn’t the only new addition to creator toolkits. Other features debuted at Made on YouTube include the “Dream Screen”—a tool that generates AI backgrounds for Shorts—and an integration with Aloud that will let creators dub videos into multiple languages.

DATA • CREATORS ON THE RISE 📈

From OOTDs to online positivity, this creator is all about sharing good vibes and great fashion

Leah Ryder has always loved sharing her passion for fashion. During her eight-year career in retail, she connected with family and friends by posting snapshots of her outfits as often as she could. Then, in 2020, Ryder landed her first office job—and decided to post a few “little clips” of her new work clothes on TikTok.

Suddenly, friends weren’t the only ones paying attention to her OOTDs.

It wasn’t long before one of Ryder’s “three-second” videos shot to 200,000 views on TikTok. At that point, the creator says, she realized “that people were really craving plus-size fashion.” Ryder was happy to answer the call.

❝

That’s really my goal always, is to just make people feel good, make people feel confident, and encourage you to wear what you love.

The TikToker juggled content creation and office work for as long as she could, until one day she realized that she was running herself “ragged.” So, with a loyal fanbase and trusted management on her side, Ryder decided to go all in.

It was the right choice: a year and a half later, the social media star is now a full-time content creator with nearly 880,000 followers on TikTok and another 150,000 on Instagram. Find out more about her social media journey here.

PRETEEN TITANS

Pocket.watch’s first feature film will bring Ryan’s World to theaters

One of YouTube’s top child stars is coming to a theater near you. Ryan Kaji (aka the 11-year-old face of the Ryan’s World brand) is set to star in Ryan’s World the Movie: Titan Universe Adventure alongside his parents, Shion and Loann, and his little sisters Emma and Kate.

The 2024 film will be a first for both the Kaji family’s Sunlight Productions and their long-term partners at media company pocket.watch. Former Nickelodeon exec Albie Hecht—who currently serves as pocket.watch’s Chief Content Officer—will direct Ryan’s World the Movie, in addition to serving as a co-producer alongside Shion and Loann Kaji.

“Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with many super talented young stars and Ryan‘s authenticity, intelligence, and ability to instantly connect with audiences offer unlimited possibilities and create a strong foundation for his ever-growing success.”

Albie Hecht, pocket.watch Chief Content Officer

The film itself will revolve around the Red Titan (the superhero at the center of the Ryan’s World brand) and the wider Titan Universe—but the Kajis won’t be the only creators represented on-screen. Come late 2024, moviegoers will be treated to appearances from several of pocket.watch’s other creator partners, including magician Dan Rhodes, Evangeline Lomelino of GEM Sisters, and Stella Wallace of The Stella Show.

Those stars represent only a fraction of pocket.watch’s network, which has grown by leaps and bounds since it first teamed up with the Kajis in 2017. As of now, the media company is partnered with 47 creators, who have collectively picked up 544 billion YouTube views and attracted more than 806 million subscribers.

Kevin Bacon just won the TikTok pet spinning trend

If you’ve been on TikTok lately, then you’ve probably seen at least a few people spin their pets around to the rhythm of Taylor Swift’s “Make Your Day.” The majority of those woe-begotten animals have been disgruntled cats and dogs—but that’s not the way Kevin Bacon rolls.

The Footloose actor put his own spin on the trend by strapping a cell phone to his forehead and approaching a very wary goat (who promptly ran in the other direction). Bacon’s second choice in dance partners was…unexpected, to say the least. Check out the full video here.
