TIKTOKā€™S LEGACY

A new Forbes report is casting doubt on TikTok's data security claims

Shou Zi Chewā€˜s Ā contentious Capitol Hill appearanceĀ  was only the beginning. The TikTok CEO's most recent remarksā€”as delivered at this year's TED 2023 conferenceā€”have already clashed with findings from a new Forbes report, which detailed potential security flaws at one of TikTokā€™s U.S. data centers.

As in D.C., the 40-year-old Singaporean exec's TED presentation Ā emphasized the securityĀ  of TikTokā€™s proposed method for storing sensitive U.S. user data on American servers (aka Project Texas), and its effectiveness at preventing Chinese authorities from using TikTok to meddle in U.S. elections.

"Today, by default, all new U.S. data is already stored in the Oracle Cloud infrastructure. So itā€™s in this protected U.S. environment that we talked about in the United States. We still have some legacy data to delete in our own servers in Virginia and in Singapore.ā€

One key phrase could cause problems for TikTok: "legacy data."

In a report published just one day after Chew's speech, Forbes journalist Emily Baker-White presented evidence of security risks at the Virginia-based data centers used by TikTok. Baker-White interviewed seven current and former employees and reviewed 60 documents in the course of her investigation, which uncovered several potential breaches, including unattended boxes of hard drives, unescorted visitors, and unmarked flash drives plugged into servers. It's not a good look for TikTokā€”but the Bytedance-owned platform isn't giving up the goose anytime soon. Forbes shared Ā this statementĀ  from the app, which echoed Chew's claims that Project Texas is "very, very far along" and defended its security measures:

ā€œIn the past several years, weā€™ve increased our investments in people, processes, and technology to help safeguard our community, including establishing a team dedicated to data center operations, maintenance, and compliance."

Creators clashed, platforms poached, and Cocomelon held onto its crown

Cocomelon ā€“ Nursery Rhymes collected 763 million weekly views for a 28% week-over-week viewership increase. That massive total helped the Moonbug subsidiary hold onto its first-place title, while comedian Alan Chikin Chow claimed runner-up status and Shorts hub YoesIan came in at #3.

Former SeatGeek VP of influencer marketing Ian Borthwick and Greg Hempenius (formerly SeatGeekā€™s manager of influencer partnerships) announced the launch of their own marketing company, Leveraged Media. SeatGeek itself is joining the agency as a client.

Kick isn't afraid to stir the pot when it comes to courting the internet's top streamers. After Twitch created some custom kicks for Kai Cenat, the upstart competitor signaled its own interest by sending the creator a brand-new pair of Nikes.

Alex Wassabi emerged victorious after facing Ian ā€œiDubbbzā€ Jomha during this month's Creator Clash 2 influencer boxing event. The main card bout between Wassabi and Jomha went the full four rounds, but two judges ultimately ruled in Wassabiā€™s favor.

SIBLING STAR POWER

These NIL superstars are teaming up with another pair of social media siblings: the Pauls

NIL athletes-turned-creators Haley and Hanna Cavinder have Ā signed on as equity partnersĀ  for Jake Paulā€™s eight-month-old sports betting venture, Ā BetrĀ . The sibling duo reaches 4.5 million followers on their Ā Cavinder Twins TikTok accountĀ  and have just completed their fourth year of NCAA eligibility by attending the University of Miami. The Cavinders made millions from NIL deals during their college basketball days; at one point, those partnerships were so numerous that they actually triggered anĀ Ā NCAA investigationĀ . (The twins were ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing.)

Things keep getting Betr and Betr for the Cavinders.

The Cavinders are hoping to double down on their success in the sports world by taking a stake in Betr and contributing to its content platform (the company mixes small-scale wagers with original videos). Betr Founder and CEO Joey Levy announced the budding partnership onĀ Ā InstagramĀ :

ā€œBetr can and will leverage the rapidly growing Jake Paul and Betr Media audiences to make emerging talent even more famous than they already are, while also providing best-in-class content development, production, and media sales infrastructure ā€” all while offering material cash and equity upside into Betr Holdings, which owns both Betr Media and Betr Gaming.ā€

Ā Betr's PresidentĀ  isn't the only Paul brother teaming up with the Cavinders. Beginning with spring training, the twins also Ā plan to joinĀ Ā Logan Paul in the WWE.
