STORY TIME

Twitch is launching its own spin on Stories. Hereā€™s everything streamers need to know:

Letā€™s face it: Stories arenā€™t exactly a revolutionary social media tool. The feature can be found on every platform from Instagram to TikTok, with most iterations consisting of short posts that appear above usersā€™ feeds and disappear around the 24-hour mark.

Twitch is doing things a little differently.

According to senior product manager Eduardo Fenili, the streaming platformā€™s spin on Stories will be less ephemeral than most. Temporary posts on Twitch will last 48 hours instead of 24, and will include the added perk of push notifications. That last feature is a big one when it comes to on-platform discoverability and audience-buildingā€”two crucial growth factors that many creators feel are lacking on Twitch.

ā€œOne of the reasons we wanted to bring stories to Twitch is that it makes it possible for you to easily reach out to your Twitch followers. If your regularly scheduled stream will be starting 30 minutes late, you can let your community know with a story.ā€

Eduardo Fenili, Twitch Senior Product Manager

For now, Twitch Stories can only be posted by partner and affiliate streamers who have streamed at least once in the last 30 daysā€”but other creators shouldnā€™t count themselves out just yet. The platform says it will consider opening access to additional streamers ā€œas we test the safety measures we have in place.ā€

IN THE MOMENT

Patreon is diving into the world of digital creator events with a brand-new acquisition

Patreonā€™s ten-year plan is off to an ambitious start. The company has announced the acquisition of Moment, a hosting and ticketing platform that lets creators hold digital events.

ā€œEarlier this month, we introduced a reimagined Patreon built entirely for creators and their fansā€¦with Moment, weā€™re bringing creators one more way to share their art with their biggest fans through ticketed digital experiences.ā€

As Conte noted, Patreonā€™s big acquisition comes ā€œon the heels of releasing our new brand identity, mobile app, and a suite of creator tools.ā€ Those milestones are part of a larger mission to build ā€œa sustainable future for creators by giving them a direct line to the people who love their workā€ā€”but to accomplish that lofty goal, Patreon will need to go far beyond the digital paywalls of its past.

Thatā€™s where Moment comes in.

Since its founding by Arjun Mehta, Nigel Egrari, and Shray Bansal in 2019, Moment has raised $13.5 million from investorsā€”including big names like Cody Ko, Noel Miller, UTA, and Halseyā€”and generated some major buzz in the creator economy. The results speak for themselves: by 2021, the platform had sold more than 1 million tickets to fans across 168 countries and 44 territories (per Moment).

Creators and fans wonā€™t have to wait long to see what Moment does under Patreonā€™s tutelage. According to Variety, the platformā€™s first post-acquisition event will be an October 19 episode of Crooked Mediaā€™s Pod Save America.

YouTube Creator Liaison Rene Ritchie just delivered the mother of all update announcements in a single 4-minute video. That jam-packed clip covered everything from a brand-new account hubā€”aka the You tabā€”to the launch of voice search, screen lock, a new-and-improved fast-forward function, rotating comments, animated response buttons, and more.

Thereā€™s obviously a lot to unpack there, so weā€™ll let Ritchie take it from here.
