It's Tuesday and the world of jiu-jitsu has a warning for Elon Musk: Mark Zuckerberg has earned a shiny new blue belt, and he’s not afraid to use it.

DRUMROLL, PLEASE…

MatPat (aka the creator of The Game Theorists) is this year’s Streamys host.

Meet the nominees for the 13th annual Streamy Awards, hosted by MatPat:

With a new summer date and an iconic host, the 2023 Streamy Awards are shaping up to be the event of the year. Come August 27, MatPat will be the one running the show—but for now, allow us to introduce a few of this year’s Streamy Award nominees:

Starting off with the most nominated creators of 2023…

Three-time Creator of the Year MrBeast has once again reeled in a record number of nominations. The YouTube star will compete for Collaboration, Creator for Social Good, Creator Product (for Feastables), the Streamys Brand Award for Brand Engagement, and—of course—Creator of the Year. That last award comes with some stiff competition; MrBeast will have to take down rising and long-established stars like Airrack, Alix Earle, Charli D’Amelio, Jay Shetty, JiDion, Logan Paul, Mikayla Nogueira, Ryan Trahan, and Zach King to come out on top.

Kai Cenat is the next most-nominated creator. The Twitch dominator snagged four nods, while culinary superstar grandma Cooking with Lynja and streamer extraordinaire Hasanabi scored three each.

A brand-new award will add some intrigue to the mix:

In collaboration with Rolling Stone, the Streamys will honor 2023’s most impactful (and most memed) songs by presenting The Sound of the Year award. Nominees include bangers like “Area Codes” by Kaliii, “GOATED.” by Armani White, “Here With Me” by d4vd, “Unholy” by Sam Smith and Kim Petras, and “What It Is” by Doechii.

For a full list of nominees, check out our website here—and don’t forget to tune in to Streamys socials on the big night. This year’s show is produced by Tubefilter and dick clark productions, and will stream live at 6 p.m. Pacific/9 p.m. Eastern on August 27.

This creator’s short-form superpower: finding the humor in family drama

For Alfredo Larin, producing a viral video comes down to three simple ingredients: silly expressions, funny hats, and relatable family humor. The YouTube star has fine-tuned his approach to short-form comedy over the last year, making his channel a mainstay in our Global Top 50 chart. It’s not hard to see why viewers get a kick of out Larin’s mega-viral videos: the creator has a knack for translating universal family experiences into 60-second skits.

Whether you’re fighting with a sibling or having flashbacks to your fourth-grade science fair, Larin has a video designed just for you—and for the 17.6 million fans subscribed to his YouTube channel.

That relatability has sent Larin’s viewership stats soaring.

Larin’s channel has scored more than 1 billion views every month since December 2022. Data from Gospel Stats.

July is already shaping up to be one of Larin’s best months ever, with hundreds of millions of views rushing in every week:

  • Over the course of our last seven-day count, the Shorts star collected a whopping 494.5 million weekly views.

  • That weekly count contributed to an even more impressive number: Larin’s lifetime total of over 15.2 billion views.

  • All those views sent the creator’s channel soaring to #4 in the Global Top 50—only three steps away from being the most-viewed channel in the world.

TikTok is taking on Twitter and Threads with a brand-new text-based feature

Threads isn’t the only platform gunning for Twitter’s user base. Only weeks after the debut of Meta’s new text-focused app, TikTok has introduced its own version of written posts. In an introductory blog post, TikTok described its latest offering as “a new way to create”:

“With text posts, we’re expanding the boundaries of content creation for everyone on TikTok, giving the written creativity we’ve seen in comments, captions, and videos a dedicated space to shine.”

According to TikTok, users can enhance their text posts with Stickers, Sounds, and other in-app products. Communities like #BookTok will likely find a variety of literary uses for the new feature: as TikTok pointed out, the availability of text posts will allow creators “to share their stories, poems, lyrics, and other written content.”

Text posts could also attract users who haven’t yet discovered their place on TikTok. The app’s new offering will likely appeal to viewers on both YouTube (which has repeatedly extolled the value of a multiformat approach) and Twitter, where Elon Musk’s erratic decision-making has led to an exodus of millions of users. TikTok’s new text-based abilities could be relevant to Google, too—if young viewers are still interested in using the Bytedance-owned app as a search engine, that is.

What does nostalgia sound like? Just ask Josh Harmon.

Josh Harmon is more than an insanely talented drummer. With his litany of musical instruments and off-the-wall props, the TikToker can imitate just about any sound—including Snoopy’s pizza-making routine and Olaf’s off-putting attempt at charades.

In fact, Harmon has reenacted the sound effects from some of TV and film’s most iconic scenes, including clips from Wednesday, Spider-Man, and The Lion King. Check out his channel here if you’re in the mood for some auditory nostalgia.
