AWARDS SEASON

Streamy Awards submissions just opened—and thanks to Viral Nation, they’re 100% free

The Streamy Awards celebrate the internet’s hottest stars, so it makes sense that this year’s Los Angeles-based event will be a summer soiree.

The 13th annual Streamys, presented by Dick Clark Productions and Tubefilter on August 27, will hand out honors across nearly 50 categories—including one brand-new award. Iconic music publication Rolling Stone is joining forces with the Streamys to present The Rolling Stone Sound of the Year, which will honor songs that dominated content creation on social media.

“Rolling Stone is thrilled to expand our support of creators to the Streamy Awards, a true celebration of the talent and innovation of this community.”

Gus Wenner, Rolling Stone CEO

If you’re hoping to take home a trophy at this year’s Streamys, you’re in luck:

Submissions are free this year thanks to Viral Nation (but they won’t stay open for long).

Submissions for the 2023 Streamy Awards are open for just over one month—from April 27 to May 30—at streamys.org/submissions. Nominees will be announced in July 2023, so creators have plenty to look forward to this summer. Here’s what Tubefilter CEO Drew Baldwin had to say about this year’s big event:

“Summer Streamys will be a vibe. We’re psyched to be partnering with Rolling Stone to launch a new music award that is truly native to social and captures how we discover and share music.”

DATA • YOUTUBE MILLIONAIRES 📈

Meet the YouTube star bringing new life to the Walking Dead community

Demir might be a high schooler, but he already has years of social media experience under his belt. In fact, the creator says he’s been making videos since he was “really young”—so young that the idea of scoring one million YouTube subscribers has been on his mind since elementary school:

“That was actually my goal since I was really little. I think I wrote that down in my yearbook quote when I was in fifth grade.”

Fast forward to 2023, and Demir has already surpassed his goal of hitting one million YouTube subscribers (and scored another 2.4 million TikTok followers in the process). His content varies by platform, but when it comes to YouTube, the creator’s top videos all focus on one central theme: The Walking Dead.

Clashed PR saw a big uptick in views and subscribers between November and December. Data from Gospel Stats.

Demir is 100% serious about his “really big Walking Dead obsession,” but his channel—aka Clashed PR—initially “started as a joke.” His friends were growing weary of 24/7 Walking Dead references, so the YouTuber jokingly asked if he should start making Shorts about the show instead. The response was an enthusiastic ‘yes.’

It was the right answer.

  • Less than a year later, Clashed PR has accumulated more than 1.7 billion lifetime views.

  • Plus, the channel regularly brings in over 200 million views per month.

  • As for the videos themselves? Demir’s top three Shorts each claim more than 50 million views all on their own.

MKBHD X ATOMS

Introducing Model 251: a shoe inspired by MKBHD’s first-ever tech video

When MKBHD (aka technology YouTuber Marques Brownlee) first ordered from “everyday” fashion brand Atoms in 2022, he only intended to buy a face mask. The company’s founders—Sidra Qasim and Waqas Ali—had other ideas:

“We reached out to him and said, ‘We are fans of you, and we love the way you explain products,'” Qasim told Fast Company. “‘We would love to see if there is a world where we can work together to design a sneaker.'”

One year later, Brownlee and Atoms have teamed up to release Model 251, a limited-edition, made-to-order pair of sneakers named after the length of the YouTuber’s first tech-themed video: two minutes and 51 seconds. The sleek black-and-red high-top sneakers will be released as a limited edition design priced at $189.

“It was incredible to actually make a sneaker that’s never been made before. The details, silhouette, and materials are inspired by my personal journey and things I already appreciate.”

MKBHD fans will want to snag a pair as soon as possible (although there probably isn’t enough inventory for all of Brownlee’s 16.8 million subscribers). Model 251 will be available for $189 until May 23, and will be made-to-order for delivery in July and August of this year. From Brownlee’s description, fans who take advantage of the limited-edition offer can look forward to receiving sneakers that are both skillfully designed and “structurally sound.”

Pixar parents might not be the best examples when it comes to child-rearing

When Pixar released films like Inside Out and Luca, it probably wasn’t expecting anyone to psychoanalyze the parenting expertise of its characters. Luckily for us, the minds behind Cinema Therapy—aka filmmaker Alan Seawright and licensed therapist Jonathan Decker—have taken it upon themselves to deliver their best takes on cartoon child-rearing.

So, which movie do you think nails the whole parenting thing—Coco, Inside Out, Luca, Onward, or Turning Red?
