Karatā€™s new tool lets creators compare their earnings to thousands of peers

Karat Financial is on a mission to make creator finances more accessible. The five-year-old fintech companyā€”which debuted its flagship creator credit card in 2020 and recently raised $70 million from investorsā€”has introduced Karat Insights, a free-to-use tool that lets creators compare their earnings against ā€œmillionsā€ of anonymized data points.

How it works: According to founders Eric Wei and Will Kim, Insights leverages data from thousands of creators whoā€™ve hooked up their bank accounts to Karat services like bookkeeping and tax prep. And since creators have to connect their own financial information to access Insights, Karat will collect even more data points as the tool gains traction.

The stats: The result is a collection of multi-platform insights like these, which help users compare their earnings (and how they collect those earnings) to both top stars and creators in similar brackets:

  1. The median annual AdSense income for YouTubers with one million subscribers is $90,025.

  2. Twitch streamers with a million followers have a median annual income of $542,208.

  3. TikTokers with a million followers have median annual earnings of $473 from TikTokā€™s Creator Fund.

Why it matters: As Karatā€™s team built their creator-focused financial tools, Kim says they realized that ā€œcreators today one, donā€™t know how much theyā€™re making, and two, they donā€™t know how much they should expect from their content.ā€

  • That lack of transparency makes it difficult for creators to know how much they could (or should) be making from brand deals, sponsorships, and ad-supported content.

  • By offering clear comparative data across multiple platforms, Insights makes that financial information more accessibleā€”giving creators the knowledge they need to advocate for themselves and grow their channels.

Top 3 Branded Videos: Mark Rober risks it all for the NFL

The latest edition of Gospel Statsā€™ Weekly Brand Report includes not one but two Mark Rober collabs. The former NASA engineer teamed up with the NFL to score nearly 40 million views, while fans of a different popular game propelled Dhar Mann to the top of the branded charts.

šŸ„‡ Mark Rober x the NFL: How To GUARANTEE Your Team Wins
Rober risked the wrath of football fans everywhere by switching sides during the biggest NFL game of the year. The creator generated plenty of IRL boos and online buzz by donning a reversible jersey that allowed him to change allegiances whenever a new Super Bowl contender snagged the ball.

Donā€™t try this at home games, kids.

šŸ„ˆ Mark Rober x the NFL: Worldā€™s Longest Drink Helmet
Roberā€™s second NFL schtick was less controversial (although it probably generated a fair amount of jealousy). The creator set up a long hose during the Super Bowl to share cold beer with surrounding spectatorsā€”including fellow NFL creator partner Ryan Trahan.

šŸ„‰ Dhar Mann Studios x Genshin Impact: Boy Will Not SHOW His FACE Inside School, What Happens Next Is Shocking
Dhar Mannā€™s latest morality tale included an RPG-themed twist. In between bullying and defending a new Genshin Impact-loving student, the episodeā€™s colorful characters shared fun facts about the gameā€™s open-world maps and handy co-op mode.

LAW OF THE LAND šŸ§‘ā€āš–ļø

Will the Supreme Court allow states to ban social media censorship?

After years of injunctions and appeals, two controversial state laws are headed to the Supreme Court.

The laws: That case centers on Texasā€™ HB 20ā€”a 2021 law that aims to stop platforms from taking actions to ā€œblock, ban, remove, deplatform, demonetize, de-boost, restrict, deny equal access or visibility to, or otherwise discriminate against expressionā€ā€”and a Florida law that prevents platforms from banning users who are seeking political office in the state.

  • A federal appeals court gave the first of those laws a win back in May, only for the Supreme Courtā€™s ā€œshadow docketā€ to reinstate an injunction that prevented HB 20 from going into effect the next month.

  • A subsequent appeal triggered an additional decision from Judge Andrew S. Oldham, who ruled in HB 20ā€™s favor.

The context: Although its shadow docket previously ruled against HB 20 in a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Courtā€™s next move could be another story. Back in May, Justice Kagan endorsed neither the majority (which included both her fellow Democrats and Republican-appointed justices Barrett and Roberts) nor the dissenting opinion put forth by Justices Alito, Gorsuch, and Thomas.

The big picture: If Justice Kagan sides with HB 20 this time around (and Justices Barrett and Roberts maintain their earlier positions), the Supreme Court would likely uphold the protections platforms receive from Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996.

  • In simple terms, that would allow platforms to continue moderating and demonetizing certain content (i.e. hate speech, climate denial content, political misinformation).

  • The other scenarioā€”in which Kagan, Barrett, and Roberts vote in HB 20ā€™s favorā€”could change the face of social media censorship by giving states the power to prevent platforms from blocking or demonetizing users for almost any reason.

Sorry, #BookTok: Dads are the same across all genres (even YA fantasy)

The content: Gentle parenting is never easyā€”but itā€™s especially difficult when your kids are dating vampires, bringing home magical artifacts, and attending demigodsā€™ birthdays.

  • The Dad Who Lived understands that struggle better than anyone. His hilarious TikTok skits remind #BookTok fans that even fantasy heroes have fathers who love them (and are very concerned about their 400-year-old love interests).
