CREATOR SHUTDOWN
YouTube creators were completely overlooked at the 2024 Emmys
The nominations:YouTube CEO Neal Mohan might be ready for Emmy Award-winning YouTube creators, but the Television Academy clearly isn’t.
The list of nominees included exactly zero YouTube-based shows, despite submissions from Amelia Dimoldenberg‘s Chicken Shop Date (for consideration in the Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series category), Sean Evans‘ Hot Ones (Outstanding Talk Series), and Rhett & Link‘s Good Mythical Morning (also Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series).
The shows that did score nominations were mainly traditional talk shows and digital companions to series like Late Night with Seth Meyers. The Outstanding Talk Series category included The Daily Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live, while The Eric Andre Show and AppleTV+’s Carpool Karaoke series snagged short-form noms.
“The only problem I have with the nominees is that Jon Stewart hasn’t faced the wings of death yet. It’s time, Jon!”
Industry perspective: Some snubbed parties (including Chris Schonberger, the General Manager of Hot Ones distributor First We Feast) have taken the Television Academy’s oversight in stride—but many in the industryhave questions about this year’s omission.
For one: why has the Emmys embraced other non-traditional distributors—including streaming services like Netflix, which scored more nominations than any other distributor at 107—while continuing to ignore YouTube-native content?
It’s certainly not because YouTube hasn’t made the jump to TV. According to Mohan, users watch an average of one billion hours of YouTube content on TV screens every single day. If the Television Academy plans to keep up with modern viewers, it will need to take that content seriously rather than favoring shows familiar to the old guard of traditional entertainment.

LIVIN’ THE DREAM
YouTube sports stars will duke it out in a DreamCon dodgeball showdown
The triumphant return: The House of Highlights Creator League is headed back to DreamCon. The 2024 edition of RDCWorld’s Black nerd get-together will feature two creator-led athletic events: the con’s third annual dodgeball showdown (July 26) and a rivalry-fueled basketball game (July 27).
The second face-off will see RDC creators go head-to-head with members of creator supergroup AMP. Last year, a team captained by RDC leader Mark Phillips defeated a crew headed by streamer JiDion. That win had a lot to do with Duke Dennis’ on-court prowess—but in 2024, the AMP creator will be drafting his own team to compete against Phillips’ squad.
Fans eager to discover the identities of other team members should keep an eye on Creator League socials, where all will be revealed in due time.
The big picture: HoH’s DreamCon collab is bound to unlock new opportunities for participating stars, but creators won’t be the only winners to come out of next week’s athletic showcase. HoH has tripled its branded content revenue by working directly with digital-first talent, and previous visits to DreamCon have resulted in millions of on-demand views for the Bleacher Report-affiliated network.
Other sports brands have taken similar steps to harness the power of online creators. The NFL joined forces with YouTube stars like Mark Rober and MrBeast to draw views at this year’s Super Bowl, while the NBA created buzz ahead of All-Star Weekend with a celebrity game featuring creators like Kai Cenat, Tristan Jass, and Lilly Singh.
Fans looking to sit in on 2024’s latest creator sports event can snag tickets to DreamCon here.

It’s time for an uncomfortable conversation about Cody Ko
The allegations: Tiny Meat Gang’s Cody Ko is facing some serious heat online. A viral video from creator D’Angelo Wallace has brought attention to Tana Mongeau’s claim that a 25-year-old Ko had sex with her when she was just 17.
That information stems from a May 30 recording of Mongeau’s Cancelled podcast, which was released on June 21. During the episode, the creator noted that Ko pursued her eight years ago at Playlist Live despite being aware that she was underage.
As Wallace’s video points out, creators and fans have had plenty of time to call out Ko’s alleged behavior. In addition to Mongeau’s statutory rape claim (which she’s maintained since 2021), Ko is a close friend and occasional collaborator of Colby Leachman, who was put on probation by Duke University for “the non-consensual videotaping of a sex act with another student.”
